Second stratum was quite the jump in terms of enemies actually being able to do damage to me. Until I gained a few levels, it was difficult to make much progress except a bit at a time.

The FOEs were pretty roadkill, however, mostly since I could (and would) go all out. Bears were pretty easy. They would open with AoE fear, but that could whiff and be healed. I accidentally bumped into a Moa. They were annoying. To beat? Heavens, no. Immunize totally neutered them like most of anything else. No, getting their drop was a pain in the ass.

I got the Clear Key on B7, opening up being able to explore the hidden side of the first stratum. Most of the enemies past a certain point were from the second stratum, including some from floors I didn't reach. I actually had to thread out shortly before getting to the shortcut! Very horrid timing there.

Then there were elephants. I killed them. In fact, if I walked into their rooms from behind, I could ambush them and get up Immunize without issue.

One of my goals here after was to get a bunch of Iron Shell drops for a powerful Axe. Then Larkspur could use Swords for random groups, Axes for bosses and FOEs, and shrug for single random enemies. It was kind of a boring grind.

But not as boring as the infamous five day survival test. This requires you. In the remake, at least in story mode, it is mitigated by cutting nighttime out, but here it was all one big boring bland 24 hour party. Mostly Petaloid massacre because they're in most of the fights. Which made it hard to just mindlessly autobattle everything. I had to pay attention sometimes in case my characters got slept and damaged - it added up over time. I think if I grinded near the take spot I could avoid them, but then I just had to worry about poisoning scorpions which were even worse.

As part of this, I fully committed to getting combat Medic into action this early. L10 ATK Up gives an insane +300% attack bonus, and then they have a powerful attack skill to go with it. So Meconops(is) could bash stuff and kill really fast too, after getting up Immunize if needed.

The amount of EXP grinding here was insane! I was actually curious if I could take the Wyvern (sort of an early superboss?) this early between that and Immunize's nonsense.

Answer: not during it when I tried, but by the end of it, yes. The only problem was that it took multiple attempts to win and the fight could be screwy. I eventually dealt with it by using boosted Immunize later, because that's when the fight got more dangerous.

At this point, there was really not much more to the stratum. I eventually hit level 38, ten higher than the boss of the place! There was a quest to get some fossils from the mine spots here, other than that, nothing special.

Needless to say, after doing the long trip there, there wasn't much to fighting the thing. I actually didn't get a chance to get boosted Immunize up (I ran Defender at first) since it died that fast. Check out boosted MEDIC SMASH. I just made sure I got the regular drop for now. Unlocked a new sword and bow, woo.

From next time onward I go into better detail on things like I used to, though still not as much detail because Etrian 1 is pretty uninvolved.
